It is an interesting phenomenon that Physicians are hearing about the latest and greatest medical trends and treatments – not from our “prestigious medical journals” – but from our patients and the mass media, just like everyone else! This is exactly what happened when a patient of mine sent me a youtube video of a Paediatrician in the USA. The good Doctor acted upon a little known recent suggestion in the literature that suggested that a viable treatment for her husband’s rapidly deteriorating Alzheimer’s Disease. The treatment was simple: a couple of teaspoons of coconut oil once a day.
The Doctor’s husband almost immediately showed remarkable signs of improvement in his cognitive processes and memory. Since then, there have been innumerable similar case reports, though little further direct research has been done on the benefits of coconut oil to Alzheimer’s Disease and other cognitive decline diseases. The reason for this is that there is probably not a lot of money to be made in the treatment of Alzheimer’s with Coconut oil. The substance is cheap and plentiful. Spending hundreds of millions of dollars on researching the efficacy of coconut oil as a treatment – simply isn’t supported by any economic model in the world at present.
So where does that leave us?
Bottom line is that coconut oil is relatively safe and non-harmful to most people. The “bad news” about coconut oil in the past was when movie theatres used HYDROGENATED coconut oil (liquid at room temperature) to cook popcorn. This was similar to boiling your popcorn in liquid poison. Regular coconut oil is perfectly safe, and has been shown to increase your HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol). A couple of teaspoons per day of coconut oil is therefore a “reasonable thing to try” if you are worried about your memory or the memory/cognitive processes of a loved one.
Coconut Oil comes as a solid at room temperature, and can be found in most grocery stores in the oil section. I personally go for the organic stuff.
While it is probably far from the ideal cure for Alzheimer’s and other cognitive decline diseases, coconut oil may well be the cheapest and least harmful viable treatment that we have for the condition.
A couple of teaspoons a day is all it takes. Some people put it on toast – and others put it in their tea. The oil melts very quickly and has absolutely no colour of flavour. I shake it into my tea with some milk and a little agave syrup – it is quite good!
In fact – I think I remembered where I left my keys! Now I can do the groceries! The list is in my head…….
